Nepal is getting ready to welcome some one million international visitors over the coming year after 2011 was designated as Nepal Tourism Year.

Expatriate health insurance policyholders are expected to swell traveller numbers to an all-time high, after 2009 featured just under 400,000 visitors.

Laxman Gautam, spokesperson for the Nepal Tourism Board, said the country is expecting "an unprecedented rise in the number of arrivals" and noted that Nepal has become more accessible to expat medical insurance customers in the last couple of years.

"Tourism entrepreneurs are developing new packages by including new adventure and culture activities. New tourism sites are being opened and the whole year will enjoy the fun fairs," he said of 2011.

Mr Gautam's comments follow research by the tourism board showing that year-on-year growth in the number of arrivals was up 24.3 per cent to 34,415 in August compared with 2009.

The number of expatriates and other visitors from the UK alone increased by 15.5 per cent.
