Expat Health Insurance News: Human rights for expats 'should be upheld'

A leading human rights organisation in Saudi Arabia has called on the government to scrap the sponsorship system in a bid to improve workers' rights for expatriate medical insurance policyholders.
According to Arab News, Hussein Al-Sharif, supervisor of the Makkah province branch of the National Society for Human Rights, commented: "Human rights are not for any particular people" and added that citizens should not discriminate against expatriate workers in any situation.
However, he pointed out: "Our call for the cancellation of the sponsorship system should not be misunderstood as a demand to abandon the residence permit system."
Mr Al-Sharif's remarks were heard at a seminar on expatriates and their rights last Saturday (August 28th).
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian Arabic language graduates have been protesting outside the Ministry of Education over the lack of jobs available for people with their skills sets and qualifications.
Prince Naif, the interior minister, has spoken of the need to find employment for dissatisfied Saudi youths in the wake of the financial downturn.
