Canadian expats across the globe were in a jubilant mood last night after their national ice hockey team secured the last gold medal of the 2010 Winter Olympics on home soil.
The Winnipeg Free Press reports that scenes of celebration were seen in cafes and bars across Europe, Asia and the Middle East last night, with hundreds of Canadian soldiers stationed in Kandahar staying up until the early hours to watch the game.
With a victory secured, the Canadians celebrated with a fighter jet flyby, soldier Farhaan Ladhani told the paper.
Meanwhile, Adrian Mucalov, who recently moved to London, said the experience was a one-of-a-kind.
"I've watched the Super Bowl with Americans, the football World Cup with Britons, and the Olympics in Beijing, but I've never seen a crowd as spirited as the Canadians here today," he exclaimed.
In a scintillating final, Canada beat their longtime rivals and neighbours USA 3-2.
