Eurotunnel increases its security

The operator of the EuroTunnel has said it has upped security because of increasing attempts by people to smuggle themselves to the UK.
In response to the additional attempts to stowaway on trains, which cross between the UK and France, the firm has pressed the UK government to take decisive action.
"So we've asked the government to step up their protection of the ports and that's something which they have done and there are increased patrols of the army and the police," its spokesperson commented.
Eurotunnel has recently returned its first-quarter results, which revealed sales were down 23 per cent.
Opened in 1994 at the cost of more than £10 billion, the 'chunnel' provides a quick route to favourite expatriate destinations in France, but is not without its difficulties.
Recently, a fire aboard one of the trains forced the closure of one of the tunnels - leaving it out of use for eight of the 13 weeks assessed in the reports.
Despite receiving €29million (£25million) from its insurers, the company saw its revenue tumble from €187.6 (£166.6million) in 2008 to just €144.6 (£128.2million) this year.
