EHIC only provides limited cover

05/08/09 18:08

The European Union (EU) has stressed that its European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) only provides certain types of medical cover.

While encouraging British travellers to take a card with them the European Parliament has explained that its uses are limited.

"The EHIC covers only medical care which becomes necessary during a stay in another EU country," the parliament noted.

Having the card will not be an adequate substitute for dedicated expatriate health insurance, which will be more relevant to British expatriates than it would travellers.

By carrying the card you will be entitled to medical care while staying temporarily in Europe, however, "in principle the card is not issued for deliberately seeking medical treatment in another member state".

Introduced as a replacement for the E111 the EHIC is now recognised in all countrys that are part of the EU, as well as in Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
