Dubai gold rush as Indian expats celebrate Diwali

Indian expatriates in Dubai reportedly took advantage of the emirate's wealth of jewellery markets to celebrate the beginning of Diwali last week.
The National claims that the expat community marked the Hindu festival of light in a variety of ways, with shopping trips, visits to friends and family and musical performances.
According to the newspaper, those from certain regions - including Kerala and West Bengal - spend the first day of the six-day event, which fell last Thursday (October 15th), buying gold and household goods.
Tushar Patni, the owner of Ajanta Jewellers, told the news service that this year white gold had outsold the yellow version of the precious metal.
Mr Patni added that his store was busiest in the three days leading up to the festival, with the shop staying open later than usual.
Food is another essential part of Diwali tradition and Gulf News reported that many confectioners were flooded with orders for sweets well in advance of the celebrations.
