Court to hear expatriate pensions case

The European Court of Human Rights is due to hear the case of a group of expatriates unhappy their UK state pensions have been frozen.
The two-hour hearing will take place in the Strasbourg court today (September 2nd) but a judgement is not expected until early 2010.
The 13 complainants say that current legislation, which means the state pensions of Britons living in some countries is capped below the rate of inflation, is discriminatory.
Answering the expatriates' concerns, the Department of Work and Pensions argues its priority is to support those poorest pensioners living in the UK.
In response to the news, older persons' charities Age Concern and Help the Aged described the current situation as "hugely unfair".
Andrew Harrop, head of public policy for the two organisations, said: "We hope the case today will see an end to this inequality and ensure the government gives every pensioner their fair share, no matter where they decide to retire."
