Costs 'driving patients abroad for treatment'

Those unable to afford private medical treatments, or who cannot claim for procedures under subsidised health systems, are increasingly looking abroad for low-cost care, according to a healthcare expert.
Anyone living in regions with expensive healthcare may want to seek out expatriate insurance to avoid travelling for cheaper treatments in countries such as Cyprus, Poland and Hungary.
According to health tourism advice site Treatment Abroad these countries are the most popular destinations for dental care overseas among Britons.
Keith Pollard, the organisation's director, said Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece and South Africa were also frequently visited for low-cost cosmetic surgery.
In addition, India and a variety of other countries offer cheaper elective surgery, such as hip replacements, alongside other services, including IVF.
However, Mr Pollard advised that health tourism should be approached with caution and only by those who "understand the risks" and "know how to check the validity and experience of a clinic or specialist".
