Consumer group calls for new transparency in airline ticket pricing

The Air Transport Users Council (AUC) has called for airlines to include all additional charges when they advertise flight offers.
A report from the group revealed that passengers think all extra charges are imposed on airlines by other authorities.
Most people are aware that fares include lots of taxes, says the chief executive of the AUC, Simon Evans.
However, problems occur when flights are cancelled and passengers apply for a refund, Mr Evans noted.
"Some people when they don't fly think, 'I will try and get back all I can' and they go back for their taxes but they don't have specific legal entitlement to their Air Passenger Duty (APD)," he explained.
Although, if airlines were to itemise APD separately, it could be claimed back should passengers cancel their flights, Mr Evans went on.
The government has updated its guidance on APD to ensure that from November 1st 2009, passengers who fly the furthest are billed the most.
Expatriates are often frequent flyers and should investigate whether their overseas insurance covers them in case of flight delays and cancellations.
