Channel Islands no longer supports NHS treatments

07/04/09 17:46

The UK has ended a reciprocal agreement with the Channel Islands, which allowed visitors to their shores to get treatment on the NHS.

Expatriates need to ensure their international medical insurance has them covered when living in either Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark or Herm - as all are affected by the ruling.

UK residents are now no longer entitled to free healthcare in the region without international health insurance, something expatriates are also well-advised to have.

However, relatives or friends hoping to visit should first check their existing policies, Steve Williams at comparison site Confused.com, told the Times.

Mr Williams noted: "Items taken on holiday might already be covered by home insurance policies, while people with annual European or global cover will automatically be covered for UK trips."

The most notable increases in foreigners looking to move to the Channel Islands have happened since the 1960s, local website islandlife.org has claimed.
