'Brits still want to escape to Spain'

British people still have a romantic notion of Spain and many are willing to move abroad and become an expatriate in the country, according to the Spanish Property Owners Guild (SPOG).

Paul Bradley, a spokesperson for the SPOG, said that there are still hundreds of thousands of Brits who want to get away from a broken UK society and join the expatriate community in Spain.

"Spain is one of their favourite escape routes as it is so near, has a great climate and wonderful people," he said.

Mr Bradley went on to say that people should be wary of their finances before moving to Spain as many pensioners are struggling with the cost of living due to the fluctuating exchange rate.

"Regretfully there are always some idiots who buy with their hearts and not with a hard-nosed investment approach," he added.

The Jet to Let Magazine subscriber survey found that Spain was the third most popular country for people looking to invest in foreign property in 2008.
