Brits staying closer to home

Brits are taking their holidays closer to home, new research has revealed.
According to travel expert Expedia.co.uk, closer-to-home destinations are proving more popular, even when considering the current weakness of the pound.
The site claims that savvy travellers can still easily secure cheap European breaks "if properly researched and booked using the correct tools".
Mintel's recent lifestyle report has revealed the recession has had a significant effect on Brits' travel plans.
Its study noted more than a third had shied away from booking a main holiday, while government figures reveal that prior to the economic downswing, Brits had taken a record number of trips abroad.
According to national statistics, UK holidaymakers made a record 45.4 million holiday trips abroad in 2007, an increase of 56 per cent since 1997.
Popular holiday destinations often attract visitors back for longer stays and some tourists enjoy the experience so much they even opt to live as expatriates.
British tourists still flock to the Spanish Riviera and the Canary Islands, although according to Spanish airport operators AENA, visitor numbers to Lanzarote in February were down 19 per cent.
