British expatriates in France could get driving reprieve

British expats who have exceeded the speed limit and are in trouble with the law could get a reprieve under a new driving legislation.
A committee of the National Assembly has agreed that drivers who only narrowly exceeded the stated speed limit would not face points on their licence, expatriate paper the Connexion reports.
The decision applies only to first offences in which drivers were less than 5km/h over the limit.
It has been challenged by the French transport secretary Dominique Bussereau, who said it goes against government policy.
British drivers do not need to own a French licence but if they are found guilty of motoring offences they will have to take up the French documentation, the news provider adds.
Different from the UK, the French system is one whereby drivers are given points, which they then have removed for poor driving.
The DVLA says drivers can use their GB licence in the 17 European Community states without needing an International driving permit.
