British expatriates help honour war dead

09/04/09 17:31

A small British expatriate community near Elvas has joined with the Portuguese army to help remember the war dead of yesteryear.

Having been asked by the military to take responsibility for the tiny, unkempt cemetery the group applied its gardening skills and spruced up the spot, reports the Telegraph.

Since then - led by Nick Hallidie, himself a former soldier - the group has unveiled memorials to all the British and Portuguese dead and made the site a focal point for the British expatriate community.

As the bicentenary of the Peninsular War passes the Friends of the British Cemetery are organising a tour, which will guide participants through one of the local battles and include a ceremony in the cemetery.

Ex-forces destinations include Germany, Canada and Cyprus, although anyone moving to these countries for good should check they have sufficient international medical insurance.
