British expatriates advised to check deeds on Turkish houses
28/07/09 18:50
Brits who are moving to Turkey and buying property are advised to read their property's title deeds carefully.
According to the Sunday Zaman newspaper, buyers can be wrong-footed as sellers sometimes keep their title deeds, even though new documentation is issued as part of the sale.
In theory, it is possible then for a house to be sold more than once, a real worry for an expatriate who is settling into the country's pace of life.
Overseas buyers should consult the official property register, rather than just the deeds, lawyer Berk Cektir suggests to the paper.
It is important to go and check the land registry office rather than simply relying on title deeds, he reportedly claimed.
Expatriates settling in Cyprus also have to pay attention to their house particulars as many properties changed hands following the invasion by Turkey in 1974.
