A British worker has been released after being kidnapped in Nigeria.

It has been reported the man is Alan Preston, 27, from Edinburgh, who had been held for ransom for three weeks.

Rita Inoma-Abbey, a police spokeswoman said: "The British hostage abducted earlier this month has been released. His abductors released him late on Friday night. He is looking well."

For a number of expatriates a potential threat to their wellbeing comes from illnesses.

Before leaving for any African states, travellers and expatriates should make sure they have had the required series of vaccinations.

A trip to the doctor will help them establish which vaccinations are necessary.

According to Traveldoctor.co.uk, travellers should assess their own risk as experts disagree on exactly which jabs are needed.

The site notes visitors should not just rely on vaccinations but carry out the usual precautions, which "can be as important in preventing the illness as the vaccine itself".

For those hoping to stay a little longer and work as an expatriate in a foreign country, expatriate insurance could be most comforting.
