Bahrain government takes charge of expatriate workforce

The government of the Gulf state of Bahrain has said it will be taking responsibility for organising the country's expatriate workers.
Previously, the country insisted expatriates be sponsored by one of its citizens, a system which had drawn criticism from human rights groups, Agence France-Presse has reported.
From August 1st, workers will be granted two-year renewable work permits, allowing them to work, earn money and make a living in the kingdom.
The chief executive of the labor market regulatory authority, Ali Ahmed Radhi, explained that the country wanted to "conform to international regulations and human rights norms".
Mr Ahmed Radhi also said he hoped the new system would be more flexible and would help the kingdom get the expatriates it needs.
The UK's ambassador in Bahrain, Jamie Bowden, says the relationship between the two countries is "as strong and warm as ever and continues to flourish".
