All the 4s for Queensland population
20/10/09 13:55
A surprising coincidence saw Queensland's population at 04:44 local time this morning (October 20th) stand at 4,444,444.
In Chinese numerology, the number four is commonly associated with death and is considered to be unlucky.
The state's treasurer Andrew Fraser, however, maintained that the rise in numbers living in Queensland demonstrated its popularity among migrants.
He pointed out that the data collected by the Office of Economic and Statistical Research revealed an average of 2,167 new residents arrive in Queensland every week.
Mr Fraser added that this represented the second highest growth rate for all Australia's states and territories.
The population surge could place Queensland's infrastructure, services and job market under increased pressure, he noted.
This year marks the state's 150th year of independence from New South Wales, with special events taking place throughout 2009.
December 10th marks Proclamation Day and celebrations will culminate with a concert in Brisbane.
